Catuaba Bark Extract: Detoxify Your Body

Erythroxylum catuaba is a vigorous-growing, small tree that produces yellow and orange flowers and small, dark yellow, oval-shaped, inedible fruit. It grows in the northern part of Brazil in Amazonas, Para, Pernambuco, Bahia, Maranhao, and Alagoas.

Moreover, three other (unapproved) botanical names for catuaba are used incorrectly in herbal commerce today: Juniperus brasiliensis (which is thought to refer to “small catuaba”), and Anemopaegma mirandum and Eriotheca candolleana, which are completely different species altogether. Anemopaegma is a huge tree in the Bignonia family, growing to 40 m tall and called catuaba-verdadeira in Brazil. This species of tree is now harvested and exported out of Brazil by inexperienced or unethical harvestors (resulting in the incorporation in herbal products sold in the U.S. today) as just “catuaba.”

The catuaba tree is a small tree with orange and yellow flowers. It produces an oval-shape fruit that is not edible. The catuaba tree belongs to the genus erythroxylum, which contains several species from which cocaine is derived.

Clinical studies on catuaba also have shown results related to its antibacterial and antiviral properties. A 1992 study indicated that an extract of catuaba (Erythoxlyum catuaba) was effective in protecting mice from lethal infections of Escherichia coli and Staphlococcus aureus, in addition to inhibiting HIV significantly.

In Brazilian herbal medicine today, catuaba is considered a central nervous system stimulant with aphrodisiac properties. A bark decoction is commonly used for sexual impotency, agitation, nervousness, nerve pain and weakness, poor memory or forgetfulness, and sexual weakness.

Catuapa bark contains alkaloids, tannins, resins, aromatic oils, falconoid and other constituents. Researchers in Japan discovered that catuapa contains powerful antiviral and antibacterial compounds. Rain-Tree.com states that a 1992 study indicated that catuaba extract was effective in protecting mice against E. coli and staph infection as well as significantly inhibiting HIV.

For generations, indigenous people have used catuaba bark not only as an aphrodisiac but also for many health benefits. It has been used to lessen pain, improve memory, calm anxiety and alleviate fatigue, among other benefits.

According to Michael van Straten, noted British author and researcher of medicinal plants, catuaba is beneficial to men and women as an aphrodisiac, but “it is in the area of male impotence that the most striking results have been reported” and “there is no evidence of side effects, even after long-term use.

Iraqi Doctors Use Acupuncture As Alternative To Scarce Pain Relief Drugs

Doctors and scientists in Iraq have turned to alternative medicines after experiencing inconsistent supplies of a much used anti-natal drug for treating pregnancies. When anaesthetists realised their stocks of oxytocin was running low they considered the possible alternatives in tackling the pain endured during labour.

The doctors inserted fine needles into certain points on the body to see if they could reduce or replace the need for the drug which was in low supply at the time. The results suggested that the ancient Chinese technique could also be a useful addition to standard medical practice.

Over a period of two years, the doctors conducted the treatment with patients who needed emergency caesarean procedures. It was used in place of the drug which was used to help the womb contract and cut the risk of bleeding. Acupuncture the most widely used of alternative medicines and is based on the theory that inserting and manipulating fine needles at specific points will control the body’s natural ‘Chi’ or energy.

The experiment involved inserting six acupuncture needles into the mother’s toes and ankles and manually stimulated for five to 10 minutes immediately after delivery. The acupuncture points were said to relate to bleeding from the womb, prolapse of the womb, difficult labour, uterine contractions, and retention of the placenta.

The results are widely regarded as a great step forward in a world of necessity such as war torn Baghdad. But the study is not without it’s critics, Edzard Ernst, professor of complementary medicine at Britain’s Peninsula Medical School said Zcherky’s study was misleading and “The fact is that, until fairly recently, women gave birth without medication or acupuncture and, in some parts of the world, they still do.”

The Baghdad doctors have begun controlled tests on other patients to investigate the possibilities of the treatment in other areas of medicine, they have noted that it is not an attempt to use a cheaper alternative to drugs but to develop an emergency substitute to them if there was a disruption in the supply.

There are a variety of alternative medicines available locally such as hypnotherapy Wilmslow and osteopathy Cheshire
